Get those remote controls aimed and ready to tune into Black Harbour -- it's a Canadian series we don't want to see sink.
This CBC series takes the realism of North of 60 and the small-town charm of Road to Avonlea and tells the story of a Hollywood family that moves back to a fishing village in Nova Scotia. Black Harbour premieres tonight at 9 p.m. on CBC.
This isn't about a dysfunctional family that deserves to be on Ricki Lake's talk show -- this is a "normal" family which has real personal issues to deal with. There are fragile brother/sister, mother/daughter and husband/wife relationships here.
Part of the success of the realism of this show belongs to the writers, however, the talented cast also deserves praise. The actor's controlled performances keep this believable.
Rebecca Jenkins, as Katherine Hubbard, and Geraint Wyn Davies, as her husband Nick Haskell, are particularly strong. Despite the emotional roller-coaster they're on, the couple maintain an underlying level of love.
