The line dividing Rebecca Jenkins with her character Katherine Hubbard are blurred.
On the emotional, new CBC series Black Harbour -- which premieres tonight at 9 p.m. on CBC -- Jenkins (Bye Bye Blues) plays Katherine, a Hollywood mother and restaurateur who moves her family back to her hometown in Nova Scotia.
Jenkins, who toured the world with Parachute Club and Jane Siberry, spent several of her formative years in the Maritime province.
She and her family are now back on the East Coast.
"I spent a lot of time ferreting around in tide pools when I was a kid. My mother knows all about marine life," says Jenkins, who lived in Halifax between the ages of eight and 10.
And like her on-screen personality, Jenkins is also a mother.
In the Mill Cove-shot series, Katherine has 14-year-old and nine-year-old daughters who have difficulty adjusting to small town life.
In reality, Jenkins is a new mother -- her daughter Sadie is only nine months old.
But like her fictional daughters, the little bundle of joy is determined.
"Sadie has a strong will. I'm thinking teenage hell. ... It will be a good test of my patience," Jenkins tells the Sun during a break from filming.
"There's a lot of transference on the set -- when I miss my baby, I squeeze that little one. (The young actresses) get so much love from me on the set it's ridiculous," she says.
Jenkins met her husband, Markus Wade, on the Jasper set of Destiny Ridge where he was a boom operator.
"Our baby was conceived and born in the same province I was conceived and born in and I kinda like that," says the Innisfail-born singer/actress.
Katherine and Jenkins share other personality traits as well.
"I have a little of a control thing that I work on.
"She's trying to keep everything together," explains Jenkins.
In Black Harbour, Katherine hates her hometown -- a point Jenkins can't relate to.
"I don't have the same bad memories that she did. I was only too happy to run back here.
"I love having the chance to be in Nova Scotia again. My brother lives a half hour away and I usually never get to see him and I adore him."
"Now, I spend a lot of weekends with he and his family and the baby loves it."
The self-described "wild rose" says people on the East Coast have much in common with Albertans. "I find Alberta people and East Coast people very similar. They are exceptionally down to earth and very real with no attitude."
After filming wraps on the first 13 episodes of Black Harbour, Jenkins plans to head to Toronto and record her debut album. "It's been a long time coming, but I feel I've learned so much. ... I feel ready. "And I feel I've finally earned the right to speak."
