Edmonton Symphony Orchestra Special - Jazz, George, & Bye Bye Blues
May, 2001
Featuring George Blondheim, Conductor and pianist Rebecca Jenkins, singer PJ Perry, saxophone
1989 was a memorable year in Edmonton's cultural history -- it was the year local director Anne Wheeler filmed the movie Bye Bye Blues, which went on to be honoured with 3 Genie Awards. When it opened in theatres later that year, Edmontonians showed their support for the local project in droves - more people saw the movie in Edmonton than in the entire province of Ontario.
One of the most memorable features of the film was George Blondheim's score, which was in turns exhilarating and heart-wrenching -- 12 years later, he will be present as the Edmonton Symphony performs a reunion concert.
Also present will be Rebecca Jenkins, who won a Best Actress Genie for her memorable portrayal of Daisy Cooper, the mother who sings for a dance band to support her family after her husband is called off to fight in World War Two.
