The Tom Thomson Memorial Art Gallery in Owen Sound is pleased to announce personal appearances by two members of Canada's film community at Owen Sound's Reel Festival – a film festival to combat the winter blahs – presented at Galaxy Cinemas in Owen Sound from February 7 to 9, 2003.
On Saturday, February 8, festival audiences have a sneak preview of the new Canadian film, MARION BRIDGE followed by a dialogue with the film's director, Wiebke von Carolsfeld, and Canadian film and television star Rebecca Jenkins.
In this emotionally charged film by Canadian writer and actor, Daniel MacIvor, Jenkins plays Theresa, one of three sisters paralyzed by family secrets. Deciding on the care of their dying mother brings the three women to new understandings about themselves and about each other. A reception at Festival Sponsor Shorty's in Downtown Owen Sound follows the screening.
MARION BRIDGE had its world premiere at last year's Toronto International Film Festival in where its director won the Citytv Award for Best Canadian First Feature Film. Since then It has been to various Canadian film festivals and had its European premiere at the International Film Festival of Rotterdam this past week. Director von Carolsfeld travelled to the Netherlands as her film was one of seven finalists for the VPRO Tiger Prize of 10,000 Euros. After Owen Sound, MARION BRIDGE goes to Victoria, BC for one more festival before it is released in Canadian theatres on the Mothers Day weekend this May.
The other award-winning films at Owen Sound's Reel Fesitval are Michael Moore's BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE, Todd Haynes' FAR FROM HEAVEN, Julie Taymor's FRIDA, and the musical documentary STANDING IN THE SHADOWS OF MOTOWN. Other festival gatherings include a reception at The Rusty Gull on Owen Sound's waterfront to open the festival on February 7 and a Sunday Brunch at Eastside Mario's on February 9.
Two passes are available for the festival: the Red-Carpet pass for $75 includes all five films, the two receptions, and Sunday brunch; the 5-Movie pass for $55 includes all five movies. After February 6, single tickets for individual screenings will be available for $12.
The mini-festival is a natural partner to Gallery Night at the Movies, which has been presenting the best in Canadian, Foreign & Alternative Films to film buffs in the region since May, 1996. This Gallery program is a co-operative effort with Toronto International Film Festival Group, Galaxy Entertainment, our sponsor Grey Motors and corporate donor PPG Canada. Screened once a month during the fall, winter and spring, films are selected by a group of moviegoers from a list provided by the Ontario Film Circuit, a division of TIFFG, and shown at the Galaxy Cinemas as a fundraising project for the Art Gallery.
Tickets and passes for Owen Sound's Reel Festival and Gallery Night at the Movies are only available at the Tom Thomson Art Gallery. Call (519) 376-1932 for more information or log on to www.tomthomson.org for the latest updates.
